Michelle's Story
Michelle's Story

Hello everyone. I think the last time I wrote about myself was in grade 3, it was called "Shining Star." A lot of living has happened since then, so I will try to keep this brief. I have an extensive background working within the Western Allopathic health care system. While Western Medicine is a very good system in many ways, there are still limitations with what we can treat. At times I felt frustrated and disillusioned
by this as I wanted to be able to do more for my patients. Years of long hours and a stressful work environment began to takes it toll on me. I was trying to help everyone except myself! I began to develop health issues- my body was literally shutting down. We knew the underlying problem, but finding a solution was more challenging.
I had always been physically active, and suddenly I couldn't be. Enter Yoga into my life. Frankly, I just wanted a reason to get out of the house and thought the stretching would feel nice. I had always wanted to try yoga, but could never fine the time. When my instructor would talk about energy flow in the body and the chakras (spinning vertices of energy along the spine), I politely thought to myself "chakras don't really exist, I have seen the human body." Through my yoga practice, I began to feel stonger, healthier and more energized. My vitality was returning. I may not be able to see the chakras but I could feel them. In fact, yoga was so beneficial for me, I became a yoga teacher!

I began to understand that there were many ways to treat, promote and maintain good health and well being. A holistic, integrated, individualized approach is needed. I began investigating other methods to help me overcome my health challenges.
I was always interested in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, and now was the perfect time to pursue it. I began receiving treatements and taking courses through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada. Family and friends became my practice subjects. To my surprise, there was no shortage of volunteers, they wanted the treatments because they felt better. To see someone literally hop off the table after their treatment, when they initially could barely move is incredible. After all this time, I am still amazed with the role acupunctue can play in helping us achieve and maintain health so we can life our best life.
